What if you set your goals, intentions, and New Year’s Resolutions…and still, nothing changes?

Here’s the thing: New Year’s Resolutions almost never, ever work out. And by that I mean that most of us have given up on them, whatever they were, by mid January.

I don’t want any of us to feel guilty for that, though, because: 1.  New Year’s resolutions don’t work for most people and 2. I’m going to show you some awesome ways to get what you truly want this year.

But first…a note about why NYR’s (New Year’s Resolutions) don’t work.

They never work if you are trying to force them through sheer willpower. We only have limited amounts of willpower, and if you are also using your willpower to refrain from the cookies, keep your cool with the kids, and not freak out in traffic…then you’re going to have even less left over to willpower your way through your new resolutions.

Some other reasons why it’s so hard to keep those NYR’s?

1. They aren’t S.M.A.R.T. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. You guys have probably already heard of SMART goals, so I won’t dive in too much here, but something like “get healthy” is never, ever going to get you through to next December. Something like “eat a salad for lunch 3 x per week” is measurable, achievable, etc.

2. They’re not action-focused. Again, if you say something like “make more money”, what actions are you going to take to make that happen?

3. They’re too huge. If you set yourself an impossible goal (notice SMART includes the word “achievable”), and your mind doesn’t actually believe you can do it, then you will start to subconsciously self-sabotage in some way. This might take the form of procrastination, low energy, or just “another day went by and nothing happened…”.

4. They’re not yours. Those NYR’s might be someone else’s idea of what you “should” be doing. If you don’t actually care about losing weight, or quitting smoking, or creating a six figure business, but your spouse has said they want you to…well, guess what, you’re not actually going to follow through on it. Anytime someone else gives us an outside “should”, that sets up an immediate oppositional stance in our minds (aka, “Fuck you, I’m eating the cookies.”)

5. You don’t have a plan. Have you planned those extra workouts into your calendar? If your goal is to make more money, have you determined HOW you will have more sales calls, get more clients, make more connections? Which days of the week, which time?

6. You haven’t written them down. Write them down! Like, every day!

7. You haven’t actually prioritized them. If you are saying “my goal is to make more money in my business” but you spend your golden hours (those special times when you are at your most productive) going grocery shopping or cleaning…then what are you really saying? Do the hard stuff first.

8. Your subconscious doesn’t believe in them. You might not actually believe that it’s possible for you to achieve what you want to achieve, or maybe you believe that what you are asking for is too hard to achieve without major sacrifice…well, then, you probably won’t do all that you need to do to go after it. (See below.)

What to do instead of NYR’s:

Limiting Beliefs Workshop: Journaling out and then tapping on all of my limiting beliefs. This starts with just listing everything “negative” that’s coming up for me, including all of the stuff about other people. This might include some deeper work, including Byron Katie’s questioning methods, and almost always includes tapping on the deeper limiting beliefs holding me back.

Future Visioning/Scripting: We are literally bringing the best possible future to you.  Yes, this is manifesting (or at least a part of it). (Want to know how I manifest more clients? Grab this free guide here.) 

So you already know that thoughts create your reality. And when you are able to envision this amazing, beautiful future, giving so much positive emotion to the process, then these thoughts will begin to line up opportunities and awesomeness in your life so that you will be creating that amazing future for yourself.

How do you actually do it? With visioning, simply picture the amazing outcome that you would like to have with lots of positive emotion and excitement, as if it was already happening for you.  If your goal is to have more clients, see these amazing people coming in through your door, handing you a check for your services, being super excited because YOU are the only person that can help them, etc. Use all of your senses.

Scripting is much the same, except you are writing it all out. Again, give as much positive emotion to this process as you can, and as much description to the process. Really see it all happening as you write it down.

One key thing to note is that if any fears or thoughts of “you can’t have that because…” pop up during this time, write them down and add them back to your Limiting Beliefs Workshop for tomorrow (or, if you have time, immediately after) but be sure to go straight back to your visioning or scripting. If you can spend just ten minutes each day in this state, amazing things will happen for you.

Taking aligned actions: as you do the above two processes, or even as you go about your day, you might have little ideas pop up in your mind, perhaps ideas about people that you need to reach out to, or an idea for a post or Facebook live or something that you need to share. Now here’s the hard part: you have to take those actions, even if they feel scary or strange or weird.

That’s it! Just doing those things will allow you to truly change things for the better in 2019.
